A driver and passenger sustained major injuries in a crash in Merced County on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol revealed in accident reports.
CHP Officer Eric Zuniga said units responded to reports of a two-vehicle accident involving an overturned vehicle in the area of Shaffer Road and Eucalyptus Avenue.
Cal Fire emergency crews were sent to the scene around 2:30 a.m.
The CHP said when its officers arrived, they found Alejandro Cortes Mandujano partially ejected through the windshield of his Honda Accord.
An unidentified female passenger who was sitting in the front seat was partially thrown out the open passenger door.
The second vehicle involved in the accident was a Dodge Durango. It was found on its passenger side in the northeast corner of the intersection.
The CHP revealed that the driver of the Dodge was Wendy Bojorquez Gutierrez and her front seat passenger was Nelson Heredia. Both of them were able to exit the vehicle.
The CHP investigation revealed that the Dodge was going north on Shaffer Road at around 50 miles per hour as it approached the Eucalyptus Avenue intersection.
The Honda was heading east on Eucalyptus and approaching the intersection.
Officers said it was unclear if Mandujano failed to stop at a stop sign or he stopped and then pulled out into the path of the Dodge. The front end of the Dodge hit the passenger side of the Honda.
The Honda sustained major damage on both sides.
Officers determined that the Mandujano was under the influence of alcohol and neither he nor his passenger was wearing a seat belt.
Both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle and Mandujano was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez suffered minor injuries.
