A tragic plane crash happened over the weekend in Auburn, California, and claimed the life of one person. The Auburn City Council in accident reports released Saturday, April 18, announced that the mayor of Auburn, Dr. Bill Kirby, was killed in the crash.

The vice mayor, Matthew Spokley, confirmed the incident in a press release, stating that the plane crashed at precisely 11 am at the Auburn Airport, shortly after take-off.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, the plane involved was a single-engine craft that had just taken off from the runway. For reasons not yet determined, the engine suddenly crashed and went ablaze as it hit the ground in an open field off Cedar Mist Lane. The pilot and the mayor were the only occupants in the plane at the time of the crash.

While Auburn Mayor Dr. Bill Kirby was killed in the tragic encounter, the pilot survived the wreck and was immediately put under medical care. The name and condition of the pilot were not disclosed.

The fatal plane crash is still under investigation by the Placer County Sheriff’s office as well as the Federal Aviation Administration to ascertain what caused the aircraft to lose control while in flight. The findings from the investigation would be included in the accident reports once they are made available.

Investigators would try to determine if there was an underlying fault in the plane before take-off. All airport staff assigned to the craft before the accident would likely be interrogated to garner more information about the crashed engine.
