Authorities have identified the person who suffered a minor injury when a small plane crashed near a Humboldt County airport Friday morning.
Paul Ray, 70, of McKinleyville, was treated for neck pain after the crash, which occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Friday near Murray Field Airport, according to the California Highway Patrol. No other injuries were reported.
Humboldt Bay Fire Department officials said emergency responders were called after a single-seat plane crashed about 3,000 feet from the runway at Murray Field Airport. They said they found the pilot, later identified by state authorities as Ray, outside the wreckage of the plane, “appearing largely uninjured.”
Troopers said Ray experienced engine issues shortly after he took off and attempted to land. However, he was unable to return to the airport and he was forced to make a crash landing in a nearby wildlife area.
The aircraft reported sustained minor damage in the wreck. The California Highway Patrol will continue the investigation, according to a press release.
“(Humboldt Bay Fire Department officials) would like to take this opportunity to remind operators of all vehicles the importance of wearing a restraining device, such as the 5-point harness that aided in the safety of the patient in this case,” first responders wrote in a press release.
