Authorities: Truck Strikes Betty Varnum In Massac County, Causing Serious Injury

Authorities said an elderly woman suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a truck Tuesday afternoon in Massac County.

Betty J. Varnum, 86, of Metropolis, was taken to an ambulance for treatment of serious injuries, the Illinois State Police said late this week. No other injuries were reported.

Troopers said Varnum was attempting to cross Fifth Street near Ferry Street just before 1 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a passing truck. Varnum was not in a crosswalk at the time, according to authorities.

The truck driver, identified as Dale Howard, 55, of Melber, Ky., was attempting to turn onto Fifth Street when he struck Varnum, troopers said. Howard, who was driving a three-axle truck, was not injured, troopers said.

The extent of Varnum’s injuries wasn’t made clear, and they didn’t say whether she has been released from the hospital. Authorities also didn’t say why Varnum was attempting to cross the street, which also is a U.S. highway, outside of the crosswalk.

The Illinois State Police is investigating the crash. It’s unclear whether additional factors, such as excessive speed, are thought to have contributed to the crash.

No citations nor charges have been reported in connection to the incident.
