Amber Sahagun Killed in Crash on I-20

The Odessa Police Department is investigating a fatal crash that took place on I-20 on Thursday.

It resulted in the death of 39-year-old Amber Sahagun of Decatur. According to OPD, officers responded to the crash on the interstate near Grant Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

Reports indicate that a pickup truck driven by 26-year-old Odessa resident Ricky Enriquez had stopped in the westbound lane because of construction.

A car driven by 40-year-old Manuel Rodriguez of Decatur was also in the westbound lane and it stopped behind the pickup. Amber Sahagun was a passenger in Rodriguez’s vehicle.

According to OPD, 42-year-old New Yorker Ranjit Singh was unable to control his speed and his semi-truck crashed into the back of Rodriguez’s car.

This had the effect of causing that car to hit Enriquez’s pickup.

Amber Sahagun was declared dead at the scene while Rodriguez was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by law enforcement officials.

Multi-vehicle collisions are more likely to occur on high-capacity and high-speed routes like freeways. As far as traffic accidents go, they tend to result in the most fatalities.

While pileups generally occur in conditions of poor visibility, they can also happen when visibility is good. In some cases, one car is simply following too close to another to stop safely if the first car stops suddenly.

Multiple people are likely to be injured in these types of crashes and determining liability in can be difficult.
