Passenger Dies After Car Hits Bridge

Kayla Eggers, 23, was killed in a car accident last Friday at the intersection of Illinois Route 130 and County Road 1500N near Charleston.

The accident, which occurred at around 11:25 p.m. on Friday evening, involved a single vehicle, driven by Shelby Espe, also 23. Apparently, Espe failed to stop at the intersection and went off the road, traveling for several hundred feet before hitting the side of a bridge and falling into a creek. Eggers, a passenger in the vehicle, was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

Espe was hospitalized at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. She is said to be in good condition, but has received multiple citations, for driving under the influence of alcohol, disobeying a stop sign, and failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Espe and Eggers were both residents of Mattoon, Illinois. A second passenger, 23-year-old Andrea Garcia of Effingham, was also hospitalized. Her condition is unknown.
