Car Hit by Train, One Injured

One person was injured after their vehicle was hit by a Coaster train in Del Mar on Saturday.

The crash occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m., at the train crossing on 15th Street. An SUV drove onto the train tracks in the path of a southbound Coaster train traveling at about 50 miles per hour. The driver of the SUV, an unidentified female, had apparently been trying to make a U-turn on the train tracks.

After being hit by the train, the SUV collided with a pedestrian, who was pinned beneath the vehicle and hospitalized with serious injuries.

There was also one passenger in the SUV. The conditions of the driver and passenger are unclear.

The crossing arms were down at the time of the incident, and the train sounded its horn to attempt to alert the driver.

No other details have been released about the people involved, although it is known that police summoned a Farsi translator to the scene.

Following the crash, trains in the area were halted for at least two and a half hours.
