Tamika Thornton, 32, and her 12-year-old daughter were killed in a car accident Friday afternoon in East St. Louis, Illinois.
The crash occurred at around 2 p.m. Thornton was turning north onto 79th Street from St. Clair Avenue, when her Suburban was hit by a second vehicle which was heading west on St. Clair.
Thornton’s vehicle was T-boned, and both Thornton and her daughter were projected from the vehicle. Both were taken to local hospitals – Thornton to Saint Louis University Hospital and her daughter to Touchette Hospital – where they were both pronounced dead later that day. The driver of the second vehicle, a red Chevy Impala, was also hospitalized in serious condition. He is expected to survive.
The accident is still under investigation, and authorities anticipate that it may be weeks before they can determine the cause. They are unsure whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. Witnesses say that the Impala did not brake before the crash. Thornton had the green light at the time of the accident.
Following the accident, many community members expressed remorse over the deaths of Thornton and her daughter. Those who are interested in helping their families can donate to a GoFundMe page that has been set up by Thornton’s sister to pay for funeral experiences and help support her two remaining daughters, aged 11 and 4.
