Four people were injured last Thursday, after an 87-year-old driver crashed into a Trader Joe’s store in Encinitas, California.
The crash, which took place at a strip mall on the 100 block of North El Camino Real, began when the driver was backing out of a parking spot. She accidentally accelerated while intending to brake, and sped backwards and ran into the store.
The crash occurred at around 2:47 p.m., and the vehicle involved was a 2002 Honda Accord.
All four people who were injured were women ranging in age from early 50s to late 80s. Three of them were hospitalized with mild to moderate injuries, while the fourth declined treatment.
The Trader Joe’s store was not seriously damaged in the crash.
The driver was not injured, but she was cited for lacking a valid California driver’s license and her vehicle was impounded. She also appears to have exceeded the parking lot speed limit. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been a factor in the crash.
