Luis Amezcua Arrested for Merced DUI and Hit-and-Run Collision

On Saturday evening, August 1st, the Merced Police Department arrested a man involved in an accident at an intersection in Merced, California. Luis Rodriguez Amezcua, 22, would need a drunk driving attorney’s service after allegedly driving impaired and fleeing the scene of the collision.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at the intersection of V Street and 9th Street at about 6:50 p.m. The investigators said that Amezcua operated a 2014 black Camaro at high speed and ran a red light. The act caused the suspect to crash into two vehicles, killing a passenger in his car.

Another passenger sustained severe injuries, and the medics airlifted him to a hospital in Modesto. Two occupants in one of the vehicles sustained minor injuries and received treatment. Amezcua fled the scene on foot, but the police caught him shortly after and placed him under arrest on suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.

The three offenses are the standard criminal charges that emanate from a motor vehicle collision, and they carry severe penalties. Offenders found guilty face time in jail, fines, administrative revocation of driver’s license, and compulsory alcohol reeducation program for the DUI. The time in prison would cover a period between four to ten years.

Additionally, an offender could face a civil lawsuit for wrongful death if the family or representative of a fatal victim chooses to sue. A guilty verdict here means payment of damages to the tune of the loss suffered.
