The man who died in a hit-and-run accident in Stanislaus County, Modesto, California, has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office on Thursday, March 5th, as Dennis Beard, 71, of Newman.

The accident that claimed Beard’s life occurred on Saturday, February 29th, at Stuhr Road near McClintock Road. The California Highway Patrol said that the driver who struck the man fled the scene without stopping to check on him.

The CHP stated that they believe the unidentified driver was driving a Sedan that is missing a driver’s side mirror. The front is likely dented from the collision with the pedestrian. There is currently no information on the whereabouts of the car or the driver.

The CHP is still investigating the crash. They have asked members of the public with credible and helpful information about the case to call their non-emergency number or the Modesto listed line.

California Vehicle Code 20001 and 20002 provides that a driver involved in a traffic accident must stop his or her vehicle when a person is minorly or seriously injured. The law applies when a person is killed or a vehicle gets damaged.

The driver should also stop when the car hit was moving or parked, and where an animal, person, or any kind of property has been hit. Failure to do so leads to a misdemeanor or felony charge depending on the circumstances of the case.

If it’s a misdemeanor, the person who defaults faces 365 days jail sentence, while a felony charge means four years in state prison. In both cases, the person will pay a fine of $10 000.
