Rebecca Morgan, 20, was killed, and another driver injured, in a crash at 3 p.m. Saturday that appears to have been caused by bad weather.
Morgan, a native of Alton, Illinois, was driving south on Interstate 255 near Pontoon Beach. After hitting a patch of ice on the road, Morgan lost control of her vehicle, a 2002 Isuzu SUV, and plowed through the center divider, hitting a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup headed in the opposite direction.
Morgan was killed immediately, and the driver of the Dodge Ram pickup was hospitalized with serious injuries. His condition has not been made public, but he is expected to survive.
Because of bad weather conditions, roads in much of the Eastern Illinois area were particularly dangerous for drivers on Friday and Saturday. Icy roads appear to have caused at least one other fatal crash in the area on Saturday, when Robert Loouveau, 23, was killed on Illinois 153 near Lively Grove, in a crash that also left his mother, Becka Heitman, seriously injured.
The poor conditions led to major traffic jams on many Eastern Illinois roadways, and some people abandoned their vehicles entirely, taking refuge in nearby churches until conditions improved.
