In California, there are over 800,000 motorcycle riders; thus, auto-motorcycle collisions are not uncommon. Most crashes of this nature often lead to severe injuries or death for the motorcycle rider, making it imperative for motorcyclists to maintain the highest sense of care and caution when riding.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles advises riders always to ensure they properly fasten on the heads a United States Department of Transportation (US-DOT) safety standard compliant helmet with covering for the eye and face. Motorcyclists should also wear protective apparel like a reflective or long-sleeved leather jacket, ankle-length boots, and open fingered gloves.
When on the road, bikers should make themselves visible and ensure they accurately communicate their intention to other road users. Additionally, keep adequate space for passing and lane splitting, and be prepared to act when an adverse situation arises.
