In an updated report of a car accident which happened earlier this week in Redding, California, authorities disclosed the identity of the deceased victim. The Shasta County’s Office of the Deputy Coroner, on Thursday, May 21, identified the pedestrian who died as Razy Lynn Tufnell, 46, of Chico.

Deputies said Tuffnell died from Blunt force injuries sustained in a tragic crash on Monday, May 18. The accident occurred on Highway 273, at Buenaventura Boulevard, where officers said a passing vehicle struck a female pedestrian, leading to her death.

Initial reports showed the pedestrian was attempting to cross to the other side of the state route when she ended up on the path of a moving car. The vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Jessica Leuschner, was northbound on 273 when she encountered the pedestrian. The female motorist told police she was unable to stop her car in time to avoid a collision. Tufnell died at the scene.

Officers called in a DUI expert to evaluate the motorist and determine his impairment status. The determined neither drug nor alcohol played a role in the fatal incident. Detectives believe speed was also not a factor.

Authorities urged possible witnesses with helpful information to get in touch with traffic specialists at the Redding Police Department.

Pedestrians should always endeavor to use a crosswalk when crossing roadways to ensure they are within a marked pedestrian-safe area. Also, witnesses should report car accidents as soon as they occur.
