Nine Firefighters Believed Dead After Helicopter Crash in California


A Sikorsky S-61 helicopter transporting firefighters to a northern California fire crashed leaving nine people dead and four others seriously injured. The crash occurred on Tuesday night just north of Redding near the Shasta Trinity National Forest. The Federation Aviation Administration reported that the crash has occurred for unknown reasons and that both FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigators were on their way to the scene to being their investigation.

The helicopter involved in the crash is owned and operated by Carson Helicopters. The helicopter that crashed is 30 years old and has been used for fighting fires for 10 years.
