At about eight o’clock on the morning of Friday, March 6th, an 84 year old Riverside resident, Francisco Martinez, was walking across University Street where it crosses Corner Street. As he moved southbound along University Street, he was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound. The driver of the Nissan Frontier, Jorge Serrato Cortez, 57, stopped his vehicle briefly before traveling onward. Although Martinez was alert and talking while at the scene of the accident, his condition worsened once he was taken to Riverside Community Hospital and he later succumbed to his injuries. A few hours later, Cortez turned himself into Riverside’s police station located on Orange Street. He was charged with felony hit and run and remanded into the Robert Presley Detention Center.
