Tragedy struck in San Diego this weekend, when a vehicle went over the guardrail of the Coronado Bridge and fell into a crowd in the park below, killing four people and injuring nine.
Chicano Park had been playing host to a festival that marked the end of the La Raza Run, a motorcycle ride through the local area and ends with a celebration at the park. Attendees had been enjoying music on the main stage and a party like atmosphere when the festivities came to a grinding halt as a truck driven by 24-year-old Navy Sailor, Richard Anthony Sepolio flew from the San Diego-Coronado Bridge above and landed his late model GMC pickup truck on a group of people below.
According to witnesses, the pickup truck driven by Sepolio leapt over the guardrail, cleared the music stage and landed nose first on a vendor’s tent occupied by a group of people. In the end, four people were killed and nine seriously injured.
The deaths included two individuals from Chandler, Arizona – a 62-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, as well as two individuals from Hacienda Heights in Los Angeles Conty – a 59-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman.
Onlookers acted quickly to help those directly involved in the accident.
The driver of the truck was stationed at the naval base on Coronado Island. He was taken to the hospital for his injuries and then arrested on four counts of vehicular manslaughter and DUI. Naval Base administration is fully cooperating with police in this matter.
