An 18-year-old teenager is in the custody of the Santa Cruz Police Department for driving under the influence and causing an accident that killed one in Santa Cruz, California, on Monday afternoon, June 15th. Mark Zembrano would need a drunk driving attorney’s expertise.

According to the SCPD, a call came in about a pedestrian injury at the intersection of Murray Street and Mott Avenue around 2:12 p.m. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a vehicle struck two pedestrians and took them to Dominican Hospital.

One of the victims, a 44-year-old woman, passed away while receiving treatment, and a 15-year-old girl is alive in stable but severe condition. The investigators will release the name of the fatal victim after notifying her next-of-kin.

Zembrano, the offending driver, remained at the scene, and the police, after determining he was under the influence, arrested him on suspicion of DUI, causing bodily harm. He is also facing a charge of vehicular manslaughter. The investigation into the accident is active, and witnesses can contact the SCPD on their listed line or drop tips at their official website.

The Center for Disease Control lists drunk driving as one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents among teenagers in the United States. Most teens drive while intoxicated, despite alcohol consumption being illegal for those below the age of 21. The problem is common with male teenagers between the ages of 15 and 20, and one of the ways of curbing it is introducing zero-tolerance laws for teen drivers.
