The officer who chased the domestic violence suspect that died after crashing his car into a light pole in Santa Rosa, California, has been identified as Officer Daniel Jones. The Santa Rosa Police Department made the identification public on Thursday, August 6th.
The car accident report disclosed that the car chase started after Jones responded to a call about domestic violence in the Casto parking lot area at the Santa Rosa Market Place on Tuesday, August 4th. Upon arrival, the officer saw 51-year-old Sean Bell of Ukiah hit a woman inside his car.
The lawman pulled his gun and ordered the man out of his car, and the woman used the distraction to leave the vehicle. Bell then drove away, taking north on Santa Rosa Avenue. Jones pursued the fleeing man, and the latter sideswiped a car, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a light pole near Taco Bell.
The man was not wearing a seatbelt, and the crash’s impact ejected him from the vehicle. He sustained extensive injuries and died at the scene. The SRPD said that on Monday, August 3rd, the county prosecutors charged Bell with felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor resisting arrest.
They added that they had an arrest warrant out for the fatal victim after he failed to appear for a scheduled hearing on Tuesday. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and the domestic violence report.
Jones has been on paid administrative leave since the occurrence because it ended fatally. He is a 15-year veteran with the SRPD and recently rotated back as a patrol officer after five years as a school resource officer at local high schools.
