Early Friday morning, 14 year old Jonathan Hernandez was found dead at the intersection of Saticoy Avenue and Telegraph Road in Ventura. He’d been riding his bicycle in the area.
After a search, police have identified 50 year old tow truck driver Martin Henderson of Double R Towing as the driver that struck and killed Hernandez. According to recovered footage, Hernandez crossed Telegraph Road against a red light. The tow truck driver entered the intersection on a green light, struck the youth and fled the scene, leaving the 14 year old for dead.
Hernandez was then struck by a second car, an SUV, that police have still not been able to track down.
Memorials have overflowed at the intersection where the popular Buena High School freshman was killed, and the family has asked the public for their help in finding the second driver. Mourners had placed a ghost bike, a bike frame painted white, at the site of the accident — a tradition in the bicycling community.
