Six-year-old Jayden Richardson, of Cairo, Georgia died after a car struck him. The incident occurred near a largely unmarked bus stop on Monday, January 27, 2020.
He and his sister Larihia Richardson, 9, had just missed the school bus to Eastside Elementary School. At about 7:30 a.m., they had turned to go back home. They were crossing at the intersection of Legion Boulevard SouthWest and Martin Luther King Junior Avenue. That’s when a car struck little Jayden Richardson. As a result of the impact, he died there in front of his sister.
People who live in the area say there are very few traffic signs on the road. There is no sign to indicate there is a bus stop in the area, or to warn drivers of children crossing. There are no crosswalks at the intersection, which is in a rural area. However, Martin Luther King Junior Avenue leads directly into the town of Cairo, and is a frequently traveled road. There is no crossing guard to help children getting on the bus.
Police are investigating the cause of crash. However, Jayden Richardson’s mother Lenessa Jones said that she hoped the city would make some changes to protect other children from harm.
