Alberto Amaro Identified as the Man Killed in Batavia Land Mower Accident

The Kane County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday, September 30th, identified the man killed after getting trapped under a land mower in a pond in Batavia, Illinois. Alberto Amaro, 56, was working for the Waldschmidt and Associates landscaping company when the incident happened.

Facts from the accident report showed that the West Chicago resident was in the 900-block of Moorehead Drive when his land mower went into the pond on Monday, September 28th. Officers with the Batavia Police, Amaro’s co-workers, and paramedics pulled him out of the water.

The report did not state how long the man was submerged before getting rescued. The medics rushed him to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, where he passed away. The coroner’s office listed drowning as the primary cause of death.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an investigation into the events leading to Amaro’s death. They will provide an update once they have more information.

In the United States, hundreds of people suffer from different injuries resulting from land mower accidents, yearly. Some of the wounds are cuts, burns from hot engines, missile injuries, fractures, and broken bones.

These injuries are preventable if land mower operators read and follow the instructions in the manual. Keep the equipment in good working condition, and pick up potential flying objects like stone, toys, and debris before using it.

Wear goggles, hearing protection, gloves, long pants, and sturdy close-toed shoes when mowing. Don’t remove safety devices, guards on switches, avoid inserting hand or feet in the mower, and never lift by the bottom for transport.
