Brendon Meyers Killed In Single-Vehicle Wreck Near Athens

Authorities have identified the teen killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on a state highway near Athens.

Brendon Meyers, 17, of Athens, was killed in the wreck, which occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Monday on Illinois 123, according to the Illinois State Police. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, but Meyers’ passenger also suffered minor injuries, car accident reports state.

Troopers said Meyers was driving east on Illinois 123 between Athens and Williamsville at 4:35 p.m. Monday when he lost control of his vehicle. Meyers’ vehicle struck a guardrail and he overcorrected, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, according to car accident reports.

The vehicle rolled several times and Meyers and his passenger, identified in car accident reports only as a 16-year-old boy from Chatham, were ejected.

Troopers said Meyers was transported via helicopter to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. However, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m.

Authorities said the vehicle’s passenger also was hospitalized. However, his wounds weren’t thought to be life-threatening, according to car accident reports.

The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Authorities have not said whether factors like intoxication, speeding or inattentive driving are thought to have contributed to the wreck.

A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Meyers’ loved ones to cover funeral expenses. The campaign’s informational post described Meyers as a “fun-loving athletic young man who loved his friends and family more than anything.”

The campaign had raised more than $12,000 in its first seven hours.
