Caleb Sullivan Identified as Victim of Interstate 74 Pedestrian Accident

Nicholas R. Smith

Over Saturday, July 4th, Coroner Duane Northrup identified 24-year-old Caleb A. Sullivan of Urbana as the fatal victim of an auto-pedestrian crash on Interstate 74 in the Champaign County area of Illinois.

The coroner said that the man died early Saturday at about 12:50 a.m. at the crash scene near mile marker 185. According to the Illinois State Police, a car traveling on the eastbound lane of I-74 at University Avenue struck Sullivan at about midnight.

The accident report showed that 53-year-old Barbara Grayum of Belvidere was driving a Kia Sportage on the roadway when the man entered on foot from the right shoulder. She struck him in the left lane. The woman suffered minor injuries, and medics took her to an area hospital to receive treatment.

The ISP closed the affected road for several hours while they investigated and collected debris. There is no additional information at this time.

Pedestrian accidents occur when a car collides with a human body leaving it with severe or fatal injuries. Auto-pedestrian crashes are preventable if pedestrians avoid jaywalking and stick to the sidewalk at all times. Wear bright colors for visibility, carry a flashlight at night, avoid texting and calling, cross at designated crosswalks, and look left-right-left before doing so.

Drivers, on their part, should avoid speeding and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Watch out for pedestrians, yield the way to them, stop at crosswalks, and cautiously back of driveways.
