Authorities said one person was killed early Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 30 in Lee County.
Cecilio Flores, 41, of Shabbona, died as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck, which was reported at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the Illinois State Police. One other person was injured in the head-on crash, according to car accident reports.
Troopers said Flores was driving west on U.S. 30 near U.S. 251 at 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle. Flores’ SUV crossed the highway’s centerline, into the path of an eastbound semi-tractor trailer, according to car accident reports.
Flores’ vehicle struck the semi head-on, authorities said. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Flores dead from wounds suffered in the crash, according to car accident reports.
The driver of the semi, Phillip Hatland, 57, of Ottawa, suffered minor injuries, the Illinois State Police reported. An updated condition report wasn’t available Friday.
It is unclear from car accident reports available Friday what led Flores to lose control of his vehicle. Troopers did not say whether they suspect factors like intoxicants or excessive speed might have contributed to the wreck.
The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police, the Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Lee County Coroner’s Office. According to a post on the sheriff’s department’s Facebook page, the highway was shut down for multiple hours after the crash while investigators worked at the scene.
