43-year-old Chad W. Stewart of Burlington, Iowa, suffered injuries after crashing his motorcycle on Wednesday evening, September 2nd, on County Road 1600N near Biggisville, Illinois. The accident report showed that the crash occurred a little after 5 p.m.

According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, the victim headed west on the roadway when he lost control of his 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Medics rushed him to the University Hospital in Iowa City by MED-FORCE for treatment of significant injuries.

Stewart’s condition is unknown at this time. The sheriff’s office had the Biggsville Ambulance service’s assistance, Biggsville Fire Department, Burlington Fire Department Ambulance, and Berg’s Towing.

Operating a motorcycle requires a different skill set than driving a car, but the same road laws apply to both motorcycle riders and drivers. The same factors also lead to accidents for the two, and those operating both vehicles can mitigate the causes for their safety.

Motorcyclists should always wear a helmet with a face shield and protective eyewear when riding and wear appropriate clothing like boots with nonskid soles and leather outfits. Attach reflective tape to the clothes to make it visible for other road users.

Riders should not assume other road users can see them, and ride defensively. Have the headlights on at dawn or dusk, stay out of a vehicle’s blind spot, signal well in advance of a change in direction, and watch out for cars turning on the roadway. Keep riding skills honed, and obey traffic rules and regulations.
