A multiple-vehicle collision in Champaign County, Illinois, left two people with injuries. The Illinois State Police named the men injured in the Thursday afternoon, August 6th, crash as Cory Kalber, 35, of Effingham, and Steven Perry, 59, of Bridgeport.
Facts from the car accident report showed that Kalber drove a van north of Illinois 49 just north of Homer Lake Road. At approximately 2:25 p.m., he drifted into the lane heading south and sideswiped a southbound Jeep driven by Perry.
The van continued south and struck the front passenger side of a southbound semi-truck driven by David Perry, a 73-year-old Homer resident. Kalber and Perry sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening and received treatment in a hospital.
The ISP shut down the affected roadway for about an hour while they cleared the scene and collected evidence. They ticketed Kalber for improper lane usage.
Under Illinois law, an improper lane usage citation is commonly used when a driver fails to stay within their lane properly or is weaving within the road in an unsafe manner. The law states explicitly that a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane.
The driver must not move from such a lane until he or she has first ascertained that such movement can be made safely. A driver who operates a vehicle while impaired would also receive a ticket for improper lane usage if a traffic accident occurs or the person weaves in and out of traffic.
