Hector Tatia Killed In 2-Vehicle Chicago Wreck

Authorities said a 14-year-old boy is dead after a two-vehicle wreck early Sunday morning on Chicago’s Near West Side.

Hector C. Tatia was pronounced dead from his injuries at a nearby hospital after the crash, which occurred just before 1 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 290, according to Illinois State Police. Three other people also were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident, car accident reports state.

Authorities said Tatia was a passenger in a vehicle that was heading east on the interstate near Paulina Street just before 1 a.m. Sunday. The driver, a 19-year-old man whom investigators did not publicly identify, crashed into the rear of another vehicle, troopers reported.

Tatia, the driver and another passenger, a 17-year-old boy, were taken to area hospitals for treatment, troopers said. The driver of the second vehicle, a 43-year-old man not publicly identified by authorities, also was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities said Tatia later was pronounced dead from his injuries. The other three suffered wounds that aren’t believed to be life-threatening.

No citations or charges have been announced by authorities. It’s unclear from car accident reports whether other factors, such as speed or intoxication, are thought to have contributed to the incident.

If either driver is deemed at fault for the crash, he likely will need to consider hiring a car injury lawyer, particularly if criminal charges are filed.

Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
