Monte Jones IDed As Bicyclist Who Died in Danville Accident

Linda Smythe

On Monday, July 6th, the Vermilion County Coroner, Jane McFadden, identified the 63-year-old man who died in an auto-bicycle accident in Danville, Illinois as Monte E. Jones.

The coroner said that the man was riding a bicycle that collided with a car at about 6:17 p.m. on Thursday, July 2nd. The accident happened at the corner of East Main Street and California Street in the Meade Park neighborhood. There is currently no information on the driver of the vehicle involved.

McFadden performed an autopsy on Jones on Saturday, July 4th, but did not reveal the details of the primary cause of the man’s death. The investigation is ongoing, and the Danville Police Department and the VCCO are collaborating on it.

Bicycle accidents are not as common as motor vehicle crashes, but they are not entirely uncommon. Multiple persons ride their bikes daily for several reasons, and they face risks while at it. Several factors can cause a bicyclist to have an accident, and it often involves a motor vehicle.

Some of the common causes of auto-pedestrian collisions are distracted driving caused by drivers paying attention to anything but the road, and failure to leave an adequate buffer between a car and bicycle riders.

Speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, unsafe lane changes, turning without looking at intersections, and running a red light or stop sign are also causes of auto-bicycle collisions. Others are failure to yield, impaired driving, and driver fatigue.
