On Sunday, February 16th, a Port Byron man crashed his car in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 88. The Illinois Police Department identified him as 54-year-old, Darin L. Martin.
Martin was driving a 2016 Honda Civic when he had his accident at about 2:50 a.m. He was traveling on the wrong way, driving east on the westbound lanes of Interstate 88 near milepost 3.5.
For reasons the police have not uncovered, Martin suddenly left the roadway to the right and entered the center median. The car then traveled east on the median, and ended up crashing at a creek embankment.
Martin was the only one traveling in the Honda, and he sustained minor injuries. He was transported in a Silvis to the Genesis Hospital, Illinois Campus, where he got treated.
A toxicology test revealed that the injured man was driving under the influence when he crashed. The police brought a DUI charge against him as well as leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.
Martin is also facing charges for improper lane usage, crossing a designated median, and disobeying a controlled device for designated lanes. The charges against the injured man are taken seriously by the court in Illinois.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a Class A misdemeanor and punishable with up to a year in jail and (or) a fine of $2500. Also, the court issues 24-month probation against the offender.
For a DUI, the offender faces one-year jail time and (or) a fine of $2500 for a first-time offense. He or she will also perform up to three hours of community service.
