On Monday, August 31st, the Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons identified the trio as Deandre C. Jones, 20, of Alton, Jaylnn A. Barnes, 19, of St. Louis, and Tyronn R. Edwards, 18, of St. Louis.
The police chief presented the details of the case to the Madison County State Attorney’s Office on Monday to get the suspects formally charged. Barnes is facing charges of failure to report an accident involving personal injury or death and aggravated battery.
The state attorney also charged the teenager with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, aggravated reckless driving, and aggravated unlawful use of weapons. Edwards is facing charges of aggravated battery and aggravated illegal use of firearms.
Jones is facing obstructing justice and disorderly conduct. Simmons said that on Saturday morning, August 29th, at about 1:45 a.m., officers saw vehicles driving recklessly and chasing each other. The cars subsequently collided after swerving at each other near the 800-block of Oakwood Avenue.
One of the vehicles fled the scene, entering the 800-block of Washington Avenue. Officers tried to stop the car using stop sticks, but the suspect deflected by veering across the oncoming lane onto the shoulder area and off the roadway.
The suspect then struck the unnamed police officer who suffered injuries. The car continued into Missouri until it became disabled, and the occupants fled from it on foot. The Alton Police, St. Louis County Police Department, and the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit searched the area for the suspects but couldn’t find them.
Ultimately, detectives from the Alton Police Criminal Investigation Division followed up on several leads and identified the suspects. They took them into custody, and Judge Richard Tognarelli set Barnes and Edwards’ bail bond at $500 000, and that of Jones at $50,000.
