Debra M. Herkes Injured, Two Killed in I-80 Crash


Three people, including a woman, sustained injuries in a crash that occurred on the I-80 on Friday, September 25. Two people lost their lives in the crash which involved a total of six vehicles. The injured woman was identified by the authorities as Debra M. Herkes, 55, of Naplate as per the latest accident reports.

According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the multi-vehicle pile-up happened on Friday morning. At around 9:30 a.m. the driver of a Freightliner Box Truck failed to control speed in time. This brought the truck into a collision with three other vehicles. The truck was carrying automotive batteries at the time. The collision caused all the four vehicles to become engulfed in flames.

Two other vehicles in close proximity with these four vehicles sustained damage. The fiery crash left multiple occupants of the initial four vehicles with injuries ranging from serious to critical. Two individuals lost their lives to these injuries. They were identified by ISP as a La Salle woman aged 47 and a Joliet man, aged 43.

Debra M. Herkes and two other drivers were injured in the crash and were transported to a local hospital. Following the crash, ISP shut down the westbound lanes of the I-80 for on-site cleanup and investigations. The westbound lanes remained closed for several hours and were reopened only at about 2:30 p.m.

ISP continues to investigate the incident. The State Patrol is yet to reveal the identities of the individuals who were killed in the crash. Subsequent accident reports may carry more details about the incident.
