A motorist is in police custody after causing a head-on collision between two cars last month, resulting in the death of one woman in Decatur, Illinois. The Macon County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the motorist on Monday, June 8, weeks after orchestrating the fatal accident.

A spokesperson for the MCSO, Sgt. Scott Flannery revealed in a statement that the suspect, Malik Lewis, 23, was in custody on charges stemming from the crash. No fewer than four casualties resulted from the accident which occurred on Monday, May 25, at the intersection of Jasper and Condit streets.

Initial reports showed that at about 9:30 p.m., two vehicles crossing the intersection of both streets collided, causing severe damages to both cars. Four people traveling in the involved vehicles suffered serious injuries, and emergency responders transported them to a hospital.

One of the victims, later identified as Jameela Cunningham, sustained life-threatening injuries. She eventually passed away from her wounds in the emergency room of the health facility. The Macon County Coroner, Michael Day, ruled her cause of death as fatal blunt trauma suffered to her torso. No information regarding the conditions of the other victims is available.

Decatur Police Department officials determined Lewis was at fault in the traffic collision. They eventually arrested him on charges of causing a crash resulting in death and failure to report an accident that resulted in death.

The victim would require representation by a top accident lawyer during the legal proceedings.
