Erik Esparza

Erik Esparza, 24, has died from the injuries he sustained in a car crash that took place on Wednesday. The crash came about as Esparza fled the police at a traffic stop which led to a brief police chase.

According to the details shared by the Aurora police, a shooting incident on the South Broadway Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. started the whole situation. Following up on the reports of the shooting, the police tried to stop a car that matched the description of the vehicle involved. At the time, Esparza and one other passenger were riding in the car.

Instead of stopping at the traffic stop, the car fled which led to a police chase. Esparza was driving the car at the time. He reportedly drove the car quite recklessly, eventually driving it into the path of the oncoming traffic in East New York Street. At some distance from the Fox Valley Mall, his car crashed into a number of other vehicles.

Esparza and his fellow passenger were critically injured in the crash. The other passenger has been identified as Adrien Betsinger, 23. Esparza was undergoing treatment at the Good Samaritan Hospital following the crash. However, he succumbed to his injuries and died the same day.

Betsinger is reported to be out of danger and faces multiple charges. These include a charge of attempted murder. First degree attempted murder carries a life sentence as per Illinois laws. For a second degree attempted murder charge, the penalties include a prison sentence of 5 to 15 years.
