Juan Cabral Dies Weeks After Being Struck By Vehicle Involved In Chicago-Area Crash

A crash earlier this month in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood has, more than two weeks later, claimed the life of a man who was walking nearby, according to authorities.

Fifty-five-year-old Juan Cabral, of Gage Park, was pronounced dead just before 8 a.m. May 23, weeks after a May 5 crash involving two vehicles, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office announced this week. He was walking near South Ashland Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle propelled into the crosswalk by a nearby crash, according to car accident reports.

Cabral at about 3 p.m. May 5 was crossing the road in the 4700 block of South Ashland Avenue when a two-vehicle crash occurred nearby, according to authorities. A Dodge Charger involved in the wreck was pushed into the crosswalk where it struck Cabral in the leg, car accident reports state.

Emergency medical personnel transported Cabral to an area hospital for treatment. He eventually succumbed to his wounds on May 23, the medical examiner’s office reported.

Medical examiner’s officials completed an autopsy, which showed Cabral died from complications from multiple injuries suffered in the crash, authorities said. The death was listed as “accidental” in car accident reports.

Information released by authorities this week provide few details about the crash. Car accident reports do not list whether anyone else was injured in the incident or details about what led to the wreck.

No criminal charges or citations have been announced by Chicago-area authorities in connection to the incident.
