A 52-year-old man from Lovington lost his life following an auto-motorcycle collision in the Lake City area of Illinois on Wednesday afternoon, August 19th. The Illinois State Police identified the victim as Michael Castelli.
Facts from the accident report placed the man on a motorcycle before the 12:52 p.m. crash at County Road 2400 N and County Road 400 E in Moultrie County. According to the preliminary investigation, a vehicle operated by 24-year-old Taylor Tucker of Taylorville headed south on County Road when he ran a stop sign.
The driver entered an intersection, and Castelli’s westbound motorcycle struck the passenger’s side of his vehicle. The impact ejected the victim from his bike; he landed on the roadway and sustained fatal injuries.
Medics took Tucker to a local hospital to treat his injuries, and the ISP ticketed him for disobeying a stop sign. There is no additional information at this moment.
Illinois traffic law requires drivers facing a steady red signal to stop at a marked stop line or if no line exists, before entering the crosswalk. If the two do not exist, the driver must stop before entering the intersection and remain at that location until the light changes to green.
The law also makes it illegal for a person to leave a roadway and travel across private property to avoid a traffic device. The preceding and the above are petty offenses and violators are liable to pay a fine not exceeding $1,000 in addition to mandatory court costs and assessments.
