Larry Williams Identified as Gridley Pedestrian Accident Victim

A Wednesday, June 10th, accident report update disclosed that the McLean County Coroner, Kathy Yoder, identified the man who died in an auto-pedestrian accident in a construction zone in Gridley, Illinois. The preliminary autopsy results showed that 59-year-old Larry Williams of Bloomington passed away from head injuries.

The coroner said that the victim died a little after 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9th, at the emergency room of Advocate BroMenn Medical Center; it was an hour after the accident. According to the Illinois State Police, Williams, a construction worker, was directing traffic through a work zone in Gridley.

A car heading westbound on US Route 24 at Ford Street then struck the man at about 8:51 a.m. The police identified the driver as Abuelsood Juma, 58, of Peoria; he remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The ISP issued him tickets for failure to yield to a construction worker and speeding.

The state police and the MCCO are continuing the investigation and will release further updates later.

Under Illinois law, drivers who speed in a construction zone can receive tickets irrespective of workers’ presence or absence. Regulatory construction zone speed limits are erected to regulate how fast a motorist travels. 65 miles per hour becomes 55mph, and the latter becomes 45mph.

The reduced speed is for the motorist and workers’ safety, and it gives drivers more time to negotiate the road’s restrictions. Those who break the speed limit laws of construction zones are liable to appear in court, pay a fine, and have their driver’s license suspended for 90 days.
