29-year-old Lucas McDaniel of Edgewood would need a car accident attorney’s services following his arrest for a hit-and-run accident in Altamont, Illinois. The Altamont Police Department took the man into custody on Wednesday, July 8th.
The incident the man is in custody for took place last weekend, on Sunday, July 5th. The police said that McDaniel, while driving his vehicle, struck a fire hydrant and left the scene on foot without calling it in. APD Chief Alan Helens said they were able to locate the suspect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
In addition to the hit-and-run, the police are charging him with several counts of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, reckless driving, and driving on a revoked license. McDaniel is also facing charges for criminal damage to property and possession of a controlled substance.
Under the Illinois Vehicle Code, a person is liable to answer for a hit-and-run if he or she leaves the scene of an accident without stopping, rendering help to an injured person, reporting the accident, or waiting for the authorities to arrive. The law expects drivers to stay at a crash site and carry out the preceding.
When there’s no injury, but there’s damage to private or public property, the driver must also remain at the scene and report the crash. He or she should locate the owner of the damaged property and exchange contact and insurance information. Failure to do any of this would mean a court appearance and jail time plus a fine as punishment.
