A driver who was involved in a fatal hit-and-run turned himself in a few hours after the incident. According to the details shared by the Cook County prosecutors on Monday, April 27, the suspect turned himself in to the Chicago police. If the driver’s negligence is clearly proved in the court, the family of the deceased may retain a car injury lawyer to sue for compensation.
The incident itself took place on Saturday, April 25. The driver involved in the accident has been identified as Marcos Gomez-Andrade, 26, of Little Village, Chicago, Illinois. Gomez was driving near the intersection of the South Kedvale Avenue and the West 31st Street when he hit a pedestrian. He was driving a 2015 Chevy Yukon at the time. The collision proved fatal for the pedestrian.
According to a police surveillance camera close to the accident site, the pedestrian was thrown several feet as a result of the impact. Once first responders arrived on the scene, the injured pedestrian was rushed to the Mount Sinai Hospital. However, he couldn’t recover from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
After hitting the pedestrian, Gomez-Andrade left the scene of accident and drove away to his girlfriend’s house only a few miles away. Nearly four hours later, Gomez-Andrade contacted the police, admitted to being the driver involved in the hit-and-run, and turned himself in. The vehicle involved in the crash belongs to the father of Gomez-Andrade’s girlfriend.
The unfortunate victim of the hit-and-run accident has not been identified so far. Gomez-Andrade is currently being held on a bail of $15,000. He is charged with failure to report an accident that involved a fatality. In a case like this, the family of the victim can legally file for compensatory damages with the help of a car injury lawyer in Illinois.
