Michael Cotton Dies Nearly 2 Weeks After Hit-And-Run Crash In Chicago

– Authorities said a 60-year-old man has died nearly two weeks after he was struck by a hit-and-run motorist while walking on Chicago’s South Side.

Michael Cotton died Sunday evening, about 12 days after he was struck by a vehicle March 9, according to investigators. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

Investigators said Cotton was walking in Gresham at about 6:30 a.m. that day when he was struck by a westbound vehicle in the 1600 block of West 79th Street. The vehicle that hit Cotton kept driving without stopping to help Cotton or call for assistance.

Emergency responders transported Cotton to a nearby hospital for treatment. He remained hospitalized at the Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn until Sunday, when he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

An autopsy conducted Monday by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed trauma from the crash led to his death, authorities said.  The death was ruled an accident.

Authorities are asking for public assistance locating the vehicle involved in the wreck. Authorities said the driver was in a full-size white SUV, possibly a Dodge Journey, that last was seen traveling east on 76th Street near Racine Avenue.

The Chicago Police Department Major Accidents Unit is investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the team at 312-745-4521.
