An accident that occurred late afternoon on Wednesday, February 12, in Malta, claiming the life of a 20-year-old woman from DeKalb and injuring a 32-year-old man from Dixon.
Around 5:30 p.m. Millacent K. Miller was driving eastbound on Route 38 in her silver Chevrolet Sedan when she lost control of the vehicle. She crossed the center lane into oncoming traffic and into a red Dodge pickup driven by Sergio Vargas.
Vargas’ pickup truck struck the driver’s side door of Miller’s vehicle, which caused an extensive amount of damage.
First responders from Malta Fire Department and DeKalb County Sheriff deputies responded to the accident and subsequently closed Route 38 temporarily from Willrett and Malta Roads.
The accident occurred at the stoplight in front of Kishwaukee College.
Vargas attempted to avoid the collision with Miller but was unable to do so. He was treated by paramedics on the scene and released with only minor injuries.
Paramedics performed CPR on Miller and transported her to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital by the Malta Fire-EMS. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Miller was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The DeKalb County Sheriff’s office is still investigating the accident.
They believe that the weather played a factor in why Miller lost control of her car, to begin with. The roads were snowy that afternoon. There is no evidence to suggest that drugs and/or alcohol played a factor in the accident
