On Monday, February 17th, the Macon County Coroner’s Office, Illinois, released the name of the man who died in the single-vehicle crash on Jasper Street. He is Montrell Davis, 30, of Decatur.
The autopsy revealed that Davis died from massive generalized trauma to the head and torso. He died at about 3:55 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, February 15th, at the Decatur Memorial Hospital Emergency room.
The coroner did not release a toxicology report, and the cause of death is being ruled as an accident. Davis crashed her car in a single-vehicle accident into the median at the underpass on Jasper Street on Saturday.
The deceased was the only person in her car, and she was taken to the hospital by first responders. The Decatur Police Fatal Team is handling the investigation into the primary cause of the crash.
Single-vehicle crashes are frequent in Illinois. The reasons range from unsafe roadways, animals crossing the road unexpectedly, to motorists disobeying traffic laws, and driving with impairments.
The most common, however, include drug and alcohol abuse. Almost 30% of drivers going behind the wheel while under the influence are likely to get involved in single-vehicle crashes.
Speeding is another common cause of single-vehicle collisions. Traffic wardens have advised drivers to avoid turning at bends, intersections, and icy roads too fast; they should always maintain the speed limit.
Inexperience is another contributing factor to single-vehicle crashes, as well as distractions while driving. Environmental conditions, road and vehicle defects also contribute, and drivers should ensure both them and their cars are in tip-top shape before hitting the road.
