Nicholas R. Bunzell Released from Hospital Following Peru Auto Collision

On Friday, July 10th, the Peru Police Department revealed that the man who suffered injuries in a car crash in Peru, Illinois, left the hospital. Nicholas R. Bunzel, 38, of 2867 E. 752nd Road, Utica, had been receiving treatment at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital.

The PPD disclosed in the car accident report that the victim was involved in a multiple-vehicle collision around 9:16 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8th. The crash happened on Route 251 at Interstate 80. Buznell was speeding on the roadway when he rear-ended another vehicle.

The police said that the collision’s impact caused the second driver, identified as Timothy R. Renfrow, of East Peoria, to strike a vehicle in front of him, driven by Barbara L. Puetz, of Tonica. The report did not state if the two motorists sustained injuries from the crash.

Officers cited Bunzell for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. There is currently no additional information.

Speed is one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths, and it is sometimes the resultant effect of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In Illinois, a driver who goes beyond the legal and posted speed limit, and causes an accident in the process is liable to answer for failure to reduce speed to cause an accident.

At other times, a driver who was not speeding might receive the same charge if he or she failed to slow their vehicle in time to avoid an accident. It is a petty offense and carries a fine of up to $1, 000.
