Accident reports released by the Jo Daviess County authorities confirmed a solo ATV crash that happened over the weekend and left two people hospitalized in rural Warren, Illinois. The incident played out at night on Saturday, May 30.
The Jo Daviess County dispatch center received several 911 calls of a single-vehicle rollover crash on North Bellevue Street at about 10:30 p.m. Callers said it involved an all-terrain vehicle conveying at least four occupants.
Investigators determined that the four-seater 2020 Can-Am ATV involved was traveling south on North Bellevue, just northeast of South Holland Road. The ATV, driven by 28-year-old Richard A. Kent, of Warren, behind a second ATV/UTV, suddenly encountered a sharp bend on the roadway and failed to negotiate it properly. He lost control of the four-wheeler as a result and veered southwards off the road.
Police said the ATV skidded for about 30 yards into a field before eventually rolling over, coming to rest with its wheels up. The two rear passengers in the ATV, Nicole A. Deyo, 30, and Travis E. Near, 23, suffered serious injuries, while the driver and the front-seat passenger, Kristen Gierhart, 24, went unscathed.
The accident reports indicated that a REACT Helicopter airlifted Near to Mercy Health Riverside Hospital, Rockford, in critical condition. Deyo received transportation via ground ambulance to Darlington WI Hospital.
Detectives determined that Kent was driving while intoxicated. They took him into custody on charges of DUI-alcohol, operating an ATV/UTV on the roadway, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
