Authorities said a driver injured after a head-on crash with a semi-tractor trailer Tuesday in Peoria County has been cited for driving under the influence.
Demarcco D. Clements, 29, of Peoria, was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes of U.S. 74 at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to Illinois State Police. He struck a westbound semi head-on, police said.
Clements suffered life-threatening injuries in the wreck, according to Illinois State Police reports. The semi driver, Kenny P. Cronin, 62, of Belle Plaine, Iowa, did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision, troopers said.
As of Wednesday, Clements was listed in fair condition at a Peoria hospital, a spokeswoman told local media outlets.
The crash shutdown westbound lanes of the interstate for several hours as emergency responders worked at the scene. Clement’s vehicle was heavily damaged, and it and the semi had to be removed before traffic could resume. The interstate didn’t reopen until about 2 a.m. Wednesday, local media outlets report.
In addition to a citation for driving under the influence, Clements was cited for driving the wrong way on a one-way street, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
