One person was injured in an ATV crash that took place in the Hancock County, Illinois on Wednesday, April 1. The incident happened at night at around 9:30 p.m. and was reported to the authorities a little while later. No major injuries were cited in the accident reports surrounding the incident.
According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the crash occurred when a man was riding an ATV on the Hancock County Road 530 North. The driver was identified by the police as Ross Smith, 36, of Bowen, Illinois.
Smith was headed eastbound on the road when he appears to have lost control of the vehicle less than a mile from the 2900 East. Riding on the gravel road, the ATV left the roadway as he lost control and veered towards the ditch line. It then rolled over and came to rest after hitting an embankment. The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the collision.
Although Smith sustained injuries in the crash, he was able to ride on the ATV and drive to a home in Plymouth. Once at the home, Smith was able to contact EMS and seek help. As the first responders arrived, he was provided basic treatment for his injuries and then flown to the OSF St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. ISP reports that his injuries are not life-threatening.
ISP continues to investigate the incident. Preliminary investigations reveal that the negligence of the driver may have been a key contributing factor in causing the incident. However, any formal charges are pending until the investigations conclude. Any charges that may be brought against Ross Smith will be revealed in subsequent accident reports.
