Jermaine Leverston, 1 Other Injured in Wrong-Way Crash

Two people were injured in a car crash that took place in the Cook County on April 12, Sunday. The incident took place in the afternoon as per accident reports and was reported to the authorities around 3:00 p.m.

According to the details shared by the Illinois State Police, the crash involved two vehicles and their drivers. It occurred on the Interstate 294 in Illinois. One of the drivers was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the road. The wrong-way vehicle came directly into the path of the oncoming traffic, eventually hitting the northbound traffic in the lane.

The wrong-way driver was identified by ISP as Jermaine Leverston, 44, of Joliet, Illinois. As Leverston drove south in the northbound lane, her vehicle collided with another vehicle being driven by Keith Mereck, 66, of Valley City, Ohio.

Both drivers sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to the hospital. At this point, the nature or extent of their injuries is not known. The northbound lanes of I-294 were closed to traffic for a few hours following the crash. Once the authorities concluded the on-site cleanup and investigations, the lanes were reopened.

Authorities are yet to reveal more details surrounding the incident. It is unclear why Leverston was driving in the wrong lane and whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. As ISP and other local officials conclude their investigations, it will be clearer how the accident was caused. After the final accident reports, it will also be known whether any formal charges will be brought against Leverston.
