Abby Elizabeth Issued Citation for Single-Vehicle Crash

Michigan State Police has now issued a citation to a driver involved in a crash that took place on April 14. The driver was identified by MSP as Abby Elizabeth Colburn, 17, of Tawas City.

According to the details shared by MSP, the accident took place on Alabaster Road in Sherman Township, Michigan. Colburn was traveling westbound on the road at the time. As she neared the Binder Road, she apparently lost control of the vehicle.

Subsequent MSP investigations revealed that Colburn was on the phone at the time. As she lost control, the vehicle veered across the center line. It then left the roadway and hit a roadside tree on the opposite end of the oncoming lane.

Colburn had one other passenger with her at the time the single-vehicle crash occurred. This passenger was identified as Trinidad Sanchez, 19, of Omer. The vehicle involved in the crash was identified as a Chevrolet Malibu.

Both Colburn and Sanchez sustained injuries in the crash. Once the first responders arrived on the scene of the crash, both were transported to a local hospital for treatment. According to MSP, the injuries of both victims were not serious.

MSP continued to investigate the incident. Preliminary findings revealed that both Colburn and Sanchez were wearing seatbelts when the crash occurred. Alcohol or drug-related impairment was also ruled out by the investigators.

Once the MSP concluded the investigations, it was determined that Colburn talking on the phone was the main cause of the incident. As per the latest accident reports from MSP, Colburn has been issued a citation for being negligent.
