ATV Accident in Gerrish Township Seriously Injures Two


An ATV accident that took place in the Gerrish Township on Friday, March 27, left two people seriously injured. Another three people also sustained injuries in the incident.

According to the details shared by the Gerrish Township Police Department, the crash occurred late at night. Authorities were notified about it around 11 p.m. The incident came about when the driver of an ATV vehicle failed to slow down and stop.

The ATV vehicle was identified by the authorities as a side-by-side Polaris. The vehicle had five occupants at the time of the crash. Three of these were seated in the front seats. Police hasn’t revealed the identities of the passengers. Details provided so far show that the front seats were occupied by two Dewitt men, each aged 19, and a Lansing man, 21.

The two rear seat passengers included a Lansing man, 21, and a Canton woman aged 20. The accident occurred when the driver of the ATV didn’t halt at a ‘Stop’ sign and continued to drive on. This led the ATV into a wooded area and caused the vehicle to crash into a tree.

Two of three front-seat passengers sustained critical injuries and remain in serious condition at the Munson Hospital in Traverse City. Another occupant had sustained notable injuries but his condition remains out of danger. The two rear-seat passengers incurred relatively mild injuries. Both were taken to the Munson Hospital in Grayling where they were treated and released.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident. Speed and alcohol have been cited as likely factors in the preliminary investigations.
