Authorities said a man was killed early Sunday morning when he wrecked his all-terrain vehicle in Gratiot County.

Adam Klein, 20, of Ithaca, died from injuries sustained in the incident, which occurred at about 3 a.m. Sunday in Hamilton Township, according to the Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department. No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Deputies said Klein was driving on East Filmore Road when he lost control of his ATV and struck a tree. Klein was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries as a result, according to authorities.

Klein’s friends reportedly found his body during a search after he did not return to a nearby residence where he had been prior to the crash, according to the sheriff’s department. It’s unclear whether any citations or charges are pending.

Authorities said Klein was not wearing a helmet and the believe alcohol and speed likely contributed to the crash.

Sheriff’s department officials continue to investigate the incident.

Gratiot County authorities have permitted the use of ATVs and other off-road vehicles on most county roads since 2011. Officials in cities have the right to enact laws prohibiting the vehicles’ use on public roadways.
